After graduating from Girton College, Cambridge, she joined the London ''Evening Standard'' in 1968,〔Dennis Griffiths (ed.) ''The Encyclopedia of the British Press 1422–1992'', London and Basingstoke: Macmillan, 1992, p.280.〕 eventually becoming that newspaper's literary editor.
